1: Use a second PC and an external drive casing

If you have access to a second computer then you could purchase an external drive case/harness. You then simply remove the internal hard drive (wear an anti-static wristband when doing this), insert it into the case then plug the casing into the second PC via a standard USB cable.

Once you start up the PC the partitions should be visible just as you would see other external hard drives. This will not work however if there is component damage in your drive that caused the crash.

2: Boot from a Linux CD

You could try booting the computer using an operating system on a CD then clone the drives data to an external disk. Start by downloading a Linux LiveCD (e.g. Puppy Linux) and burning it to CD. You will need access to a second PC to do that.

Then insert the CD into the faulty computer and reboot. As the system starts, enter the BIOS menu (usually by hitting F2) and alter the boot sequence putting the CD as first priority. Restart the computer and the PC will boot up the Linux OS. Once started you should be able to browse the disk partition, and copy its contents to another external hard drive.

3: Use data recovery software

There are plenty of freeware data recovery tools you can try. They each operate by searching the crashed partition(s) for data clusters that can be recovered. Commercial tools may have better success rates by using advanced algorithms. The software does require the drive to be mechanically sound for it to work though.

4: Call in the experts

If you suspect mechanical damage, or all other attempts have failed then a data recovery service should still be able to recover data from crashed hard drive partitions using their forensic software and specialist  tools for reading the crashed drive partition directly. Some services will attempt to fix PC errors first before attempt file recovery so you may even get back a working drive.

It should be possible to recover data from crashed hard drive partitions, certainly when calling in a data recovery expert, and the fact that disk crashes happen should make it all the more important to back up your data regularly.
