I was probably one of the last people I know of to jump on the mobile phones bandwagon a number of years ago. OK, maybe my Mom held out a little longer. It’s not that I don’t like gadgets, or that I have a problem with people being able to call me whenever they want (well maybe a little), it was just that cellular carriers in my country seemed like such a bunch of crooks at the time. Their contracts were unbelievably convoluted, their charges were ridiculously high, and there was little choice in providers. But, eventually I started traveling quite a bit, and there were a few discount cell providers starting up. Eventually, I went with one of the discount providers, that has since been bought up by one of the national providers, and got an average phone, with no contract.
Once I stopped traveling though, I stopped using the phone, and just stopped making the pay-as-you-go payments. It would seem at the time that I was done with hand held mobiles for a while. I never however, stopped keeping my eye on the whole mobile phone / smartphone / mobile computing marketplace. Running my own internet based business, I was finding it more and more important to stay connected wherever I was. So, it made sense to me to once again enter the fray. I purchased a Nokia N900 a month or so ago, and am loving it. It’s really more a computer than a phone, but that’s exactly what I was looking for.
