One of the most exciting technologies that affects our lives on a daily basis may not be what you think it is. If I proposed the question, what technology has most radically changed the way we live our lives and run our businesses, I suspect that most people would say the computer. And, while the may be right, not many people realize just how important GPS technology has become in all our lives. On a personal level, by boating experience would be far different, if I didn’t have a chart plotter (marine GPS with maps) to track my many voyages. But where GPS has really made changes, is in the world of business. A commercial vehicle tracking system is just one example.
I can give you a great example of how this has made my life easier. I ride the bus, probably about six to twelve times per month. So, since I don’t ride it a whole lot, I’m not totally familiar with our local bus schedule. But, lucky for me our local transit authority has just implemented a web based system that integrates with all of our city GPS equipped buses. What that means, is I know exactly when a bus is coming right down to the minute. I was using it the first time the other day, and was pretty cool. Using my mobile phone I simply go to the website, select my bus and the stop I’m waiting at. Every 30 seconds or so, it updates itself with the arrival time. It was precise to the minute. That’s fleet tracking solutions software put to good use.
On the negative side though, it also tells me when I’ve just missed my bus
Can’t really fault them for that though now can I? Because it uses real time vehicle tracking though, I know exactly when the next bus is coming. When that happened to me last time, I used that extra time to run to the convenience store (to buy more bus tokens), and to do a little work on my mobile standing next to a wi-fi hotspot, before walking out the actual bus stop. I really do love it when technology makes my life better.
